Jeong-Yoon Lee

Mr. Jeong-yoon Lee participated in the mechanical design of NSSS Major Equipment including fuel handling and storage systems for light and heavy water reactors for 25 years in KAERI, AECL, KEPCO E&C, TÜV-SÜD-GNEC. After the Fukushima nuclear accident his main concern has been changed from design development to the safety of it.

When nuclear scandal happened in Korea in 2012, together with fellow experts who are concerned about the safety, he established the Nuclear Safety and Future (NGO) in 2013, and participated in a two-year investigation organizing experts supporting residents at the Hanbit Nuclear Power Plant site, issuing over 700 findings, which should be accepted by KHNP. Additionally, a number of important safety issues were pointed out but KHNP difficult to accept it.

In 2015, he raised issue that the latest and current standards were not applied in the Periodic Safety Review for Wolsong Unit 1 life extension, but government ignored his opinion. Civil society filed a lawsuit in court, and it was eventually permanently shut down in 2019.

Recently, together with civil society, we have been consistently pointing out the Containment air gap problems, PAR performance, SMR issue, the Fukushima contaminated water issue, the seismic problem of Wolsong reactor fuel channel, and many other issues in nuclear power plants.

Mr. Lee is Master of Mechanical Engineering, Registered Professional Engineer (in Oregon USA and in Korea), President of Nuclear Safety and Future (NGO)
